Can a dental implant be done in one day?

Same day dental implants can quickly improve your smile. Instead of waiting weeks or months for new teeth, you can get them in just a few hours. There are different types of same day implants like immediate load implants, mini dental implants, and the all-on-4 option.
These procedures are NOT suitable for everyone.
If you’re in Topeka and thinking about same day dental implants, contact an experienced specialist at Topeka Oral Surgery. We will explain the process in detail and how it can benefit you.

What Are Same Day Dental Implants?

Unlike traditional implants that take a long time, same day implants let you restore your smile on the same day you remove unhealthy teeth. But remember, the teeth attached to these implants are temporary until you can get permanent ones. Once your jaw and gums heal, you’ll receive a permanent crown or bridge 4 mont hs later.

Are SameDay Dental Implants Right for You?

Not everyone can get same-day implants. Here are some requirements:

Ideal Candidates: >95% success rate

  • Good overall health
  • Healthy jawbone
  • Non smoker

Not Suitable Candidates:  <95% success rate

  • Poor oral health
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Autoimmune disease and taking immunosuppressants
  • Taking medication to increase bone density (like Bisphosphonates)

Are Same Day Dental Implants Safe?

Same day dental implants have minimal risks, but the skill of the dentist is crucial. The biggest concern is osseointegration, which is the fusion between the implant and the jawbone. It typically takes three to six months for the wound to heal completely, even with immediate implants.
Our goal is to take the tooth out and then immediately place a dental implant. Commonly we will wait a few months to then place the crown next. By immediately placing a dental implant you are able to obtain your crown 3-4 months FASTER!! This can only be done in a select few cases.

What’s the Recovery Like?

Recovery from same day dental implants is similar to traditional ones. Every patient’s experience is different, but pain relievers and good oral hygiene can help make recovery more comfortable. We will remind you to eat on the other side which did not have surgery and advise you to take antibiotics to minimize postoperative infection risks.

Some common discomforts include:

  • Swelling of the face and gums
  • Occasional bleeding
  • Bruised gums and skin
  • Pain and irritation
  • Risk of infection
